The "Academy of Medical Sciences of Bilbao" (ACMB) is the oldest one of its kind in Spain.
It was founded in 1895, and its first President was Dr. José Carrasco y Pérez-Plaza.
The Academy has throughout its history carried out major socio-health work, of which the citizens of Bilbao and Bizkaia have been the main beneficiaries.
From the outset, it was defined as a free, multidisciplinary and multi-professional institution made up of doctors, chemists, veterinary surgeons, odontologists-dentists and biologists, who created their own medium of expression - “ La Gaceta Médica de Bilbao” (the Bilbao Medical Gazette) - which it can be said with pride is the Doyenne of Medical Journals in Spain.
In recent years, the Academy has established links with entities and institutions that are resulting in its being able to achieve its objectives:
Twenty-four Scientific Societies on a provincial, regional and inter-regional level maintain their offices at the Academy of Medical Sciences of Bilbao.
Forty-five sections of different specialities provide the backbone to the Academy’s annual Scientific Activities.
Four regular events are held on an annual basis:
The Academy is a member of the Governing Board of the Basque Museum of History of Medicine and Science of the UPV/EHU.
The Provincial Council of Bizkaia granted the Academy the Andrés E. de Mañarikua y Nuere Award in the year 2002.
Diario Médico Award for the best ideas 2006 (OVAL Project)
Diario Médico Award for the best ideas 2007 (Humanitas Chair)

"..may the fact of belonging to this Academy constitute unquestionable proof of being honourable people, more than wise ones"
Dr.D. José Carrasco y Pérez-Plaza
First President of the Academy
